On November 29, 2012, Congress held the first hearing on autism in 10 years. It was a momentous day for our community and it has been said that more hearings will come. In addition, this year the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP) compensated two new cases for children who developed autism. The members of our panel are some of the many people who have been on the frontlines to witness and to fight for these small victories in Washington. They will be giving an update on what they have been working on and what they see in the future from Congress and from the VICP. There will also be a question and answer section with our panel at the end of their presentation.

Birthyear changepoints for autism disorder are correlated with the switch from manufacturing vaccines using animal cell lines to using human fetal cells. Human fetal produced vaccines are contaminated with fragments of fetal DNA and a retrovirus, introducing the potential for genomic insertional mutagenesis. These contaminants are the likely culprits responsible for the hundreds of de novo mutations in autistic children.

What is epigenetic regulation of gene expression, and why is it particularly important in brain development? This presentation will provide a fundamental understanding of epigenetics, focusing on the specific implications of chromosome 21 trisomy.
Oxidative stress and impaired methylation are very common in autism, resulting in disruption of normal epigenetic regulation of gene expression, as well as other important effects that contribute to neurodevelopmental disorders. This talk will provide background for understanding redox/methylation pathways, and will present recent findings in postmortem brain that illustrate their role in autism.
Dr. Richard Deth is Professor of Pharmacology at Northeastern University. His research is focused on oxidative stress and impaired methylation in neurodevelopmental, neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders. He has testified before Congress and in vaccine court proceedings about how vaccine adjuvants and preservatives might contribute to autism. Dr. Deth is the author of Molecular Origins of Human Attention: The Dopamine-Folate Connection.

Hear how a girl with a severe seizure disorder was helped with ketogenic diet, how a boy with autism was helped with the gluten-free/casein-free diet, and strategies you can use to help your child feel good about their special diet. Topics include defining the ketogenic diet, how it works, and how it differs from other dietary therapies used for epilepsy.
Kim, who has a degree in elementary education and a master's in teaching and leadership, and April, who has a communications degree and a master’s business, crafted a children's picture book, Gordy and the Magic Diet, about children navigating the journey on a restrictive diet by comparing notes about their own families’ experiences.
Kim Diersen’s son Joshua battled sensory integration difficulties, trouble regulating emotions, and significant developmental delays. A gluten-free and artificial-free diet opened a whole new world for Joshua. He has been on his “Magic Diet” for 6 years to help control the behaviors of Asperger's syndrome, ADHD, and mood dysregulation.
