Children with autism frequently have intestinal inflammation as the cause of a variety of chronic GI symptoms. This talk will discuss and review the expanding published data confirming the unique tissue features of this new IBD variant and propose mechanisms by which this ASD enterocolitis may result in cognitive/behavioral deficits.
Symptoms of an inflamed GI tract (including esophagus, stomach, and both small and large intestine) interfere with overall health and impede the effectiveness of behavioral and academic therapies in children with ASD. This talk will review the variety (and often unique manifestations) of GI symptoms frequently seen in this group of poorly communicative children. Importantly, a methodical approach to accurately determining the cause of these treatable conditions will be discussed.
