The Biosciences behind Autism: Explaining the Scientific Basis for Biomedical Interventions used for the Treatment of Autistic Spectrum Disorders Video

 Fundamental basic medical sciences will be introduced and explained. This will include teaching some detailed biology (including cell biology), immunology and biochemistry, in order to provide parents and practitioners with a strong scientific foundation for understanding some of the exciting research that is unraveling in the field of autism research today. Some of the topics that will discussed include immune system regulation, dysregulation and dysfunction, antibodies and autoantibodies, opioid-like peptides, yeast and bacterial overgrowth, oxidative stress, methylation, and transsulfuration and how these topics relate to some of the latest biomedical research developments for the treatment of autism.

 

Lauren Underwood, PhD

Dr. Lauren Underwood received her PhD in biology from Tulane University. After graduation, she was awarded an NIH Post-Doctoral Fellowship. She is the parent of a child recovering from autism and a biomedical consultant for families of autistic children. She is also employed by CSC as a scientist contractor to NASA. Dr. Underwood is an AutismOne mentor, a CARD, IRB Board member, a scientific advisor for the IHA, and has co-authored several chapters in the book Understanding Autism for Dummies.
