Challenge to MOMS!!!!

Time for MOMS to get healthy & start taking care of ourselves too!

Oftentimes moms are the primary caregivers and are run so thin that the last thing we focus on is ourselves. For the last 11 years I have been a stay at home mom with 3 kids with autism. At the end of the day running from therapy appointments, cooking special foods, giving supplements, coordinating dr. visits, labs ...who has the time to think about one more thing.

I often think of the stages of the autism mom...we start by doing bare minimum & gradually adding more & more. Along the way our kids are getting better & we are getting more and more tired & run down. Not your average overworked & underpaid. As moms of children with autism & biomedical conditions...often times the maternal line has a history of autoimmune problems. Sometimes these issues get worse overtime and may not be apparent right away.

As mothers we need to try to nip these issues in ourselves. We need to be around for the long haul with our kids ....so here is my challenge : I am going to make efforts to be a healthier mom, exercise, eat right, run labs on myself to get to the root of any potential problems..whatever it takes---who's in???

Special Moms!!!!

That's why I go by the name Specialmom. It reminds me of how special, not only I am, but all of us Autism moms (and dads) are. We should all give ourselves a pat on the back. I have twin boys on the spectrum and like you, have very little time for myself. Between cooking for their special diets, biomedical treatment, therapy appointments, and trying to find time to play with them, I feel like time is my worst enemy. I have a very supportive husband, which is a blessing. I'm very lucky to have a great partner to lean on. We all need an outlet, whatever that may be.

Let`s Do It!

Well Laura, that`s quite a challenge! I only have 2 ASD kids, but don`t know how to find time for myself. My house, horses, and gardens are already sooooo neglected! It seems like every ounce of energy goes to the boys. That sounds great...and I know you`re right. I just don`t know how I`d get it done. But, I will do my best to start taking better care of myself. I definitely want to be here for a LONG, LONG time. My boys deserve that...Mary Troutman
