Redox and Methylation Status in Down Syndrome

Trisomy of chromosome 21 increases expression of a number of genes which are involved in regulation of antioxidant (redox) and methylation status, implying a potentially significant role in Down syndrome (DS). Moreover, abnormal redox and methylation pathway metabolite levels have been implicated in both DS risk and in DS cognitive function. This presentation will review current knowledge and concepts with a focus on the importance of epigenetic regulation of gene expression.

Dr. Richard Deth is Professor of Pharmacology in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Nova Southeastern University. His research interests are focused on the role of oxidative stress and impaired methylation reactions in neurodevelopmental, neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders, including the important role of epigenetic regulation. His laboratory was first to identify the unique ability of the D4 dopamine receptor to carry out phospholipid methylation.
