Establishing a Homework Routine

Establishing a Homework Routine

1. Set up a quiet, organized, and distraction-free work station.
2. Provide color coded, labeled containers and file folders for materials.
3. Turn "in/out" work baskets into "work-in-progress and "finished" baskets.
4. Assign a specific time period for doing homework that works for the child and the family.
5. Make sticking to the time frame and routine top priority.
6. Provide a concrete homework plan by breaking down assignments into manageable units.
7. Provide a visual template of the plan with estimated time frames and built-in breaks.

"Magic Clay" ~ it is often the small things in life that bring us the most joy!

Every so often we have an experience in our lives that cause us to take pause and reflect. This week I had one of those moments and I feel the need to share it with everyone. It was a moment that made me feel so good to be in the position I am in as an educator. If you still have passion for what you do, then it won't be hard for you to relate to this story. Some days are better than others, but hopefully this story brings a smile to your face today. :-)

Below is the note I wrote to my fellow colleagues and educators:

CLASSROOM AND STUDENT LEARNING NEEDS

• Are visuals used to communicate expectations
• Is there a consistent schedule and how is it communicated (pictures, written, verbal, etc.)
• How are changes in the schedule communicated to the student?
• How are assignments given? Throughout the day or at the end of the day?

SEPTEMBER (Laying the foundation)

• Has a student interest inventory or profile been done as a way to better understand the child?
• Have you read and do you truly understand what is written in the child’s IEP?
• How are support services (ex. Speech, OT, etc.) being incorporated into his day? What are the services minutes and are they being met?
• Are the SLP and OT actively providing support within the classroom setting?

A mother's confession...will you help me KISS autism goodbye?

I confess....I'm jealous. I wish those who have been afflicted with Autism had an organization to turn to for help, advice, and most importantly monetary support. St. Jude's Hospital is an outstanding resource for those with pediatric cancer. Jerry Lewis has dedicted his life to help those with muscular dystrophy. A sister ,forms an organization in honor of her sister whose life was cut short by breast cancer...Susan B. Komen. Relay for Life, Diabetes Walks, etc.

What about Autism?
