Let me extend to you my personal welcome to our AutismOne Social Network. AutismOne is now the “one-stop-shopping center” for information about autism. We have the annual conference in Chicago, AutismOne radio, the Elizabeth Birt Center for Autism Law and Advocacy and now the AutismOne Social Network (and more to come).
I notice that you’ve not made any entries into your profile. Remember, this is a social network. Part of the function of a social network is to meet and interact with others who have common interests. Of course autism is a common interest. But there is more than that. Individuals like to know about a person before becoming a “friend.” That’s where the profile comes in. So whenever you can find the time, please fill in some of the entries of your profile. To do that just click on “My User Menu” next to the Welcome area on the right. From the resulting menu click on “Edit My Profile” and you will be in business.
Helping you interact with others is one of the many things we can do for you. Now here’s something you can do for us. Every new community requires a good hard kick start to get going. We need you to help us with that. Log in on a regular basis and read the blogs and articles then write a blog yourself. It can be on any subject of interest to you, preferably with some relevance to autism but not necessarily. It can be short or long, whatever it takes for you to express your thoughts. If you have a question then ask it in a blog--people read then they respond. If you see something with which you agree or disagree then please add a comment with your thoughts. This is an open community designed to help and support. We like to hear all sides.

Does your Aspergerchild seem irritated and wound up in windy weather? It's a common phenomena in children with Aspergers and Autism, and is caused from the Sensory problems they experience.

A Little About Me:

I've been married for 23 years (yes, our marriage has survived Autism, so far!) and have 2 wonderful children who I'm very proud of - 1 of whom has Autistic Spectrum Condition.

I worked for nearly 17years as a Special Needs Educator, particularly with those on the Spectrum who were most "at risk" (a term used here in Australia to describe children who are 'at risk' of slipping through the cracks of the Education system.... those children with severely challenging behaviours).

I'm passionate about helping others take control of their journey with Autism - empowering them to focus on the positives and to create their own pathways to success for their child/student. My knowledge of the intracies and nuances of Autism Spectrum Condition comes from my son and the many, many students I've worked with over the years - they've been my "textbook" - my "Teachers" - my "Mentors".

Why I am a Part of the AutismOne Community:

I've had an "online" friendship with Rhonda for many years, through our trials and tribulations with Autism and she told me about this community some months ago. Unfortunately, I lost the link, got sidetracked, published another book, went into reprint etc etc. Luckily she emailed me recently and here I am.

What I am Here For:

I hope AutismOne will give me another outlet to share knowledge and network with others who I know and who know me simply because we tread a similar path. Perhaps we can help each other avoid the pitfalls....head off a catastrophe....keep our sense of humour....but above all to "connect" with each other in a non-judgemental environment, where we can simply love our children, "warts" and all.

Autism Help / Accomplishments:

I have published a series of 5 children's fiction books - the "Ben and His Helmet" series - particularly for children on the Autism Spectrum.
My website http://www.aspergerchild.com also offers an eBook - Aspergerchild - Simply Explained for instant download.
My "Sensory Sensitivity Workshop" is a resource to educate Teachers and Professionals about the impact of sensory sensitivities on a childs academic and emotional development.

My Daily Motivations:

The individuals in my local community, my National Community and the Global Community who are "uneducated" about Autism Spectrum Condition. (I'm trying to start a trend here by using the term "condition", as I don't like the word "disorder").

Goals:

- publish another 5 books in the 'Ben and His Helmet" series - Ben and His Helmet cartoons on TV - change the outlook of all Educators of those on the Spectrum to positive - tell the world that "all behaviour is a form of communication - it's our jopb to work out what those with AS are trying to tell us"

Help Needed:

I'd like some feedback on my books and some anecdotal stories I can share with others either on my website, or via my monthly newsletter. I'd like to hear from children who've read my books - tell me what you think. Let me know what things you struggled with in your day-to-day at school (or are struggling with) and what you'd like to see in a Ben book.
