Autism Attitudes: Working through the Stuff... What we deal with...

I am honored to have a guest post by a true Warrior Mom.... I am proud that Angela is my friend...

By: Angela Warner

The past 36 hours of my life have been absolutely fascinating. Fascinating is the only word I can
come up with right now to describe them. In the past 36 hours I have had just 2 hours of sleep,
and that was a nap in 1 hour increments. Lack of sleep in stretches like this makes me lucid, and
while I wanted to go to bed at one point, I had a few things to finish up. Little did I know just

Exercise Connection Goes to Egypt

November 8th, I am headed to Cairo, Egypt to educate the parents and professionals of the ADVANCE Center about the importance of exercise in the lives of our children and adults.
I was contacted about a month ago by the mother who started this organization. Like many mothers in our country, if they can't find the services, they will create them. Her story is no different.

Sharing Experiences

We've met many children with autism who love to talk! Often children will have a few favorite topics that they'll happily talk about children will have a few favorite topics that they'll happily talk about all day long. This can be a wonderful doorway into connecting with you child. Finding a way to be genuinely interested in what s/he is talking about will help bring you closer together.

Investment in our future. Recovery of those dealing with Autism

I just heard the President spinning the bad news about the 95.000 more jobs lost. In his speech he returns to the theme of infrastructure improvement. Roads, Bridges, rail, & Transportation. I applaud the idea that these things need to be improved. I also applaud the fact that some jobs will be created on a more permanent basis.

EPIGENETICS? Can A New Science Finally Prove Autism's Causes?

Standing on a soap box and calling out, "It's Thimerosal, it's Vaccines, it's Pesticides, it's Mercury from coal burning power plants," without the "Evidence of Harm" to back up such accusations only causes our cries to fall on deaf ears and discredits our point. Especially when the Parma companies, politicians and industry leaders lay back on their laurels and say "There is no conclusive evidence."
But all that is about to change.

Happy Anniversary and Birthday, Honey!

Dear Ed,

You are the man of my dreams and the best father and stepfather in the whole wide world. How blessed we all are. Positive dreams and thoughts and wishes can really come true. Thank you for believing in our boys and respecting them for the wonderful people they are. The boys and I are so fortunate to be able to share life with you. Thank you for your love and creativity and for all you do for us and so many others.

Happy anniversary and birthday, Honey.

Love,
Teri

The "First Date"

As I am getting ready to leave I find myself looking in the mirror checking my outfit. Is it too flashy? Is it too soft? Can this shirt be a distraction? I hesitate to put on cologne. I don’t want to smell but I also don’t want to offend my “date” or the parents.
Meeting my “date” for the first time is nerve racking enough. As I get dressed, gather stuff, it is not just about what I am wearing it is more about, “Are we going to connect?”

The Autistic Child Riding the Bus

Our autistic child, soon to turn 19, rocks when he sits and can't see in front of him. From 6th grade to 10th grade, he rode a school bus for an hour each way. Within the first year, I was sure that his poor mood when he got home was impacted by his rocking for an hour. Wouldn't you feel sick too if you swung your body to your knees for 60 minutes?

Political Football. Politics of Power People & Autism

I try to stay away from politics but When the politicians start using the cause of Autism, Special Needs, & Hunger as a political football, All parties better tighten their Fat belly belts because it is about to get UGLY.

Age of Autism: An American Classic

Most of the time the autism community moves ahead in small steps, but other times we make great strides. So it is with the publication of Olmsted and Blaxill’s seminal work, The Age of Autism: Mercury, Medicine, and a Man-made Epidemic. Today, we take a giant stride forward.

Tracing the destruction caused by mercury in medicine throughout the centuries, Olmsted and Blaxill deconstruct modern-day arguments that rest on shoddy science and manipulative semantics. Clearly written and rigorously annotated, Olmsted and Blaxill’s work is chilling in the truths it uncovers.
