Respite Idea for Service Clubs
I have a growing concern about the families who are dealing with Autism. There are many families on and off the grid that can not afford any respite time at all for the Parents & Caregivers. I am asking that every Service & Religious Organization sponsor one couple every month for a Movie & Meal for Rest & Relaxation. ( Hash Tag on twitter #MM4RR ) The continuing drain of resources tend to leave the parents & Caregivers in last place. Many have never been out as a couple in years. This one simple act of compassion will let them know we are aware, Care, support, & give needed respite.
Upfront this is a minimum of a $100 + Exercise. Logistics to be considered. Professional, competent, and trusted caregivers. Work schedules and reaching out to families. The $100 dollar estimate could be reduced by members of your club, organization, or church volunteering or getting donations from the local restaurants or movie houses. ( Theater ).
When I dream, I dream of Utopia. I feel this initiative is a much needed exercise for every service & Religious organization to learn what must be done to help families dealing with Autism. If we save one individual from Suicide or couple from divorce we have done our world a favor. If as a nation and world we learn more about helping families dealing with Autism and motivate a young person or member to move into the field of Autism Support we have even done better.
Here I just lay out a vision. Let me know what your service club or Religious organization comes up with. I look forward to spreading the word and helping develop the programs. One Couple per month ... Movie & Meal... God speed.
What can you do today...
If you are a parent... Love your child unconditionally. Do not let your child feel they are any less because they cannot communicate the way we do or look after themselves. Do not forget to look after yourself and your significant other. ( If you don't have one find one...There is someone out there for everyone. You deserved to be loved also). Join a church. Speak to your friends. Keep up the good fight.
If you are Friend... If you have resources please consider supporting Generation Rescue as they move the agenda towards services and support programs. If you do not have financial resources provide respite services... Babysit, go with a parent to the grocery store, or running errands. Be there to listen.
If you are in the medical community it is time to wake up and do something...
If you are in the insurance industry it is time to make the people responsible pay...
if you are in the media it time to tell the truth...
If you are in the government it is time act...

Respite Care
I absolutely agree with your idea. For so many of us parents, finding time to take care of each other is sometimes very difficult. I do know that the Oregon Chapter of The Autism Society of America, offer parents a dinner and movie, along with respite care for one evening a month. So, for those looking for a night out, check with your local chapter of Autism Society of America. As for other organizations stepping up and offering the same services would be a wonderful thing for so many.
